Condemned, debated: but Počiatek survives
IT HAS BEEN an interesting week for Slovakia’s finance minister, Ján Počiatek. After being condemned by the prime minister he offered to resign, but the prime minister kept him on. Then he faced an attempt by opposition parties in parliament to get him sacked, but that too came to nothing.
Option to leave private pensions ends; few do so
ONE of Prime Minister's Robert Fico’s pet projects, an attempt to shake up the pension system reforms of the previous government, is for now being wrapped up. Six months ago, what is known as the the second, 'capitalisation', pillar of the pension system - the option to pay pension contributions into a privately-managed fund - was opened up by the government, offering more than 1.5 million people the opportunity to leave it and return to the publicly-managed scheme. On June 30 that opportunity ends.
Sick man’s land attracts ‘friends’
PAVEL Bátorfi is not well. A patient of the Philippa Pinela Psychiatric hospital in Pezinok since June 5, he has been diagnosed with paranoid schizophrenia and a personality disorder. Behind the glass of men’s ward A, he talks and walks as if wading through water. In his pyjamas and slippers, he looks as if he belongs where he is.
As above-board as a Monégasque yachting trip
THE COUNTRY’S opposition now has to its credit another toothless attempt to sack a minister for what it called a complete failure to observe political ethics.
When 'beggar' is a compliment
THE 14th International Festival of Local Television, which took place in Košice from June 18 to 21, proved that local reporting doesn't mean airing stories about cowsheds and kindergartens. Established in 1995 to "celebrate, popularise and support European local TV broadcaster production," the Golden Beggar festival, as it's also known, offers journalists from around Europe a forum for presentations, constructive discussions and networking.
Different shades of grey
FOR most people, studying at Harvard sounds like a dream. But for Andrej Glézl, a young Slovak lawyer, it’s a reality.

Šaštín
THIS postcard dating back to 1911 shows a unique view of the basilica in Šaštín, in the western region of Záhorie. The basilica is shown from the back, rather than the front. On the left is an inn with a notice board that identifies it as a Vendéglő – Hostinec – Gasthaus. During the monarchy, every sign was required to be trilingual.
Culture pours onto Bratislava streets
THE SLOVAK National Theatre Ballet opened the 33rd year of the Summer of Culture festival in Bratislava in grand style.
